I personally believe that what makes a ‘good’ piece of Art is your passion, determination and dedication. If you dedicate yourself into a piece of Art you are producing – you know it is already a ‘good’ piece.
I believe that creating a good piece of Art is not always about the way it looks, not about the use of brush strokes or other materials, it is not about how good or accurate the lines are. For me, it is all about the emotion and how you are feeling at the time you are creating that piece.
You should be able to produce a piece that you can look back to and remember the story and emotion you are feeling during that moment you created it.
Art is not always about producing an image that you can figure out straight away the story behind it. I believe if you have the skills and craft you can already produce a good piece.

Something soft:
A make up brush that I use daily – This for me is very soft and easy to use. I decided to draw this as it is part of my daily life and routine to use this brush.
I decided to draw this knife that I had in my pencil case (part of my daily life). This evokes fear to me as it means danger, it could mean death – everyone is afraid of dying or getting hurt so I think this is a good example of something that evokes fear.
I was already working with roses so I decided to chose this for ‘brittle’.

Here are two images of my final painting of a real rose. This is my first attempt of painting a rose that was placed on a table in front of me and I personally believe I did quiet a good job doing this.
Firstly, I lightly sketched with a pencil the outline of the rose so that I know where to paint over and how it would be placed on my paper. I then painted over using acrylic paint that I mixed with a little bit of water. I started painting using the lightest colour which was a very light pink – I did this so I could build the colour on top and work with the shadow and dark areas without making a mistake. I find that working with the lightest colour first is easier and it avoids making a mistake.
The light was coming from the ceiling so the dark areas were mainly on top and the shadow was positioned on the bottom right. I used a very light wash of grey to create the shadow.

I used acryilic paint to practice painting and I also practiced on a plastic rose that I had on display. The difference between working with real life objects and working with fake, photographed images is the way it looks. As you can see, above, the painting looks flat and almost fake as it has no shadow, no dimension or lighting. Whereas if you look at a painting or drawing of a real object you will automatically see the difference.

Here I played around with my painting skills and my use of different brushes sizes. I wanted to practice my technique and kills first before I carried on with my final idea. I enjoyed working with and painting real life objects that are in front of me – I just had to make sure I worked and painted in the shadow according where the light was hitting the petals, leaf and branch.

Here I used a pencil to draw the same rose from a different angle. I managed to make it look realistic by following how the light was hitting the rose from a different angle. I also made sure to shade in where there was shadow to give it a 3D effect. I’d say this was the easiest way of showing how I created and used different mediums.

The image above is another work of Rose – Using another tool, a pen, I managed to create this by using the same Rose that I originally painted.
I’d say this was a lot harder than I thought as I couldn’t control the pen properly as it was an inked pen. I drew a real rose in front of me so I knew I had to also show the shadow and draw according to how the light was hitting the Rose. With the pen I used, It was hard to control how dark I was drawing on the paper. The ink was uncontrollable.
